Do Beach Cleanups Fix Ocean Plastic

Beach and coastal cleanups remove a genuinely meaningful amount of visible litter and directly benefit the specific stretch of coastline where they take place, but they address only a small fraction of ocean plastic overall, since much of it originates far offshore or accumulates in ocean areas that a shoreline cleanup simply cannot reach.
A large share of ocean plastic also breaks down into microplastics that disperse throughout the water column, well beyond what any physical cleanup effort focused on visible, larger debris washed up on a beach could realistically remove from the broader marine environment, regardless of how well organised or well attended that cleanup happens to be.
Cleanups remain genuinely worthwhile for the direct benefit they provide, including preventing more litter from breaking down further and entering the water, and for the awareness and community engagement they build around the issue, but addressing ocean plastic at a meaningful scale ultimately requires reducing plastic entering waterways in the first place.
