A common claim suggests electric vehicles simply shift pollution from the tailpipe to the power station generating their electricity, effectively cancelling out any real environmental benefit, but this overlooks that electricity generation, unlike a petrol engine, can shift toward genuinely cleaner sources over a vehicle's working lifetime without the vehicle itself changing at all.
Even accounting for the electricity used to charge them, electric vehicles generally produce meaningfully lower lifecycle emissions than an equivalent petrol vehicle in most electricity grids, since even a grid still reliant on some fossil fuel generation tends to be considerably more efficient overall than many small, individual combustion engines running independently.
Manufacturing an electric vehicle, particularly its battery, does typically carry a higher upfront emissions cost than manufacturing a comparable petrol vehicle, but this gap is generally recovered over the vehicle's operating life as it produces zero tailpipe emissions, meaning the full picture depends on considering the vehicle's entire lifecycle rather than any single stage alone.
