Do Trees Alone Solve Climate Change

Tree planting is a genuinely valuable tool for absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and restoring habitat, but it is sometimes presented as if planting enough trees could single handedly offset current levels of global emissions, a framing that considerably overstates what tree planting alone can realistically achieve within any meaningful timeframe.
Trees take years to decades to reach their full carbon absorbing capacity, meaning newly planted trees offer relatively modest near term benefit compared with the scale of emissions being produced globally right now, and planted forests can also be lost to fire, disease or land clearing, releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere.
Tree planting works best as one genuinely valuable tool within a much broader strategy that also includes reducing emissions at their source, since restoring forests cannot realistically substitute for the deeper structural changes needed across energy, transport and industry to meaningfully address the underlying scale of the climate challenge itself.
