Do Wind Turbines Kill More Birds Than Buildings

Wind turbines do cause some bird deaths, and this genuine impact is often cited prominently in debates about renewable energy, but when compared against other common causes of bird mortality, wind turbines are typically responsible for a considerably smaller share of overall bird deaths than sources like building collisions or predation by domestic cats.
This comparison does not make turbine related bird deaths irrelevant, since impacts can still be significant for specific species or locations, particularly larger birds of prey near poorly sited turbines, which is why careful site selection and, in some cases, operational adjustments during migration periods remain a genuinely important part of responsible wind farm planning.
The more useful framing recognises that all energy generation carries some environmental cost, including impacts on wildlife, and that minimising those costs through careful siting and design is a genuinely worthwhile goal, rather than treating any single, isolated statistic about turbines as the complete and final word on the entire subject.
