Does Bamboo Solve the Plastic Problem

Bamboo is often marketed as an inherently sustainable alternative to plastic, and it does grow rapidly with relatively low input compared with many other materials, but bamboo products are not automatically a straightforward environmental win once processing, transport and the specific end use of the finished product are properly considered.
Turning raw bamboo fibre into products like fabric or moulded items often involves considerable chemical processing, and the environmental footprint of that specific processing can vary widely between different manufacturers and methods, meaning the word bamboo on packaging tells a shopper relatively little about the finished product's actual overall footprint.
Bamboo also does not solve durability or end of life issues on its own, since some bamboo based products are blended with plastic resin during manufacturing specifically to improve durability, which can then make them just as difficult to recycle as conventional plastic despite the more natural sounding raw material used at the start.
