Does Unplugging Chargers Save Much Power

A once common piece of advice suggested unplugging every device charger when not actively charging something, based on the idea that a plugged in but idle charger continues drawing meaningful power, but modern chargers, particularly those built to current efficiency standards, draw an extremely small amount of standby power when left connected without a device attached.

This differs from the standby power drawn by a device that remains switched on but idle, such as a television left on standby rather than genuinely off, which can draw considerably more power than a modern, idle phone charger left plugged into an unused wall socket somewhere in the house.

The practical takeaway is that unplugging a single modern charger delivers a genuinely negligible saving on its own, meaning household energy saving efforts are generally better directed toward larger, more meaningful factors like heating, cooling and appliance efficiency rather than habitually chasing every small standby draw around the house.
