How Coastal Dune Restoration Works

Coastal dunes are naturally dynamic systems, held together largely by deep rooted native grasses and shrubs whose extensive root systems bind loose sand in place while still allowing the dune to shift and respond naturally to wind and wave action over time rather than remaining perfectly static and fixed.

Restoration typically involves replanting these stabilising native species, often behind temporary fencing that protects new growth from foot traffic while roots establish, since even light but repeated trampling can prevent young dune vegetation from ever establishing properly in an area that would otherwise recover well on its own.

Healthy, restored dunes provide a genuine buffer against coastal erosion and storm surge, protecting land further inland while also supporting species specifically adapted to this challenging, shifting environment, making dune restoration valuable for both practical coastal protection and habitat outcomes at more or less the same time, rather than just delivering one or the other.
