How Composting at Home Differs From Industrial Composting

A home compost bin relies on whatever heat is generated naturally by microbial activity within the pile itself, which is usually enough to break down fruit and vegetable scraps, garden clippings and similar material, but rarely reaches temperatures high enough to safely process meat, dairy or diseased plant matter.

Industrial composting facilities, by contrast, actively manage temperature, moisture and turning at a much larger scale, often reaching sustained high temperatures capable of breaking down a wider range of material, including some compostable packaging, more quickly and more reliably than a home bin ever could achieve.

This difference explains why some products labelled compostable specifically state they require industrial composting rather than a home bin. Placing such an item in a home compost pile may see it break down far more slowly than expected, if it breaks down meaningfully at all within a normal composting timeframe. Checking a product's specific labelling before relying on it in a home bin avoids a fairly common source of disappointment.
