How Composting Breaks Down Organic Waste

Composting relies on microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi, that consume organic material and break it down into simpler compounds, releasing heat as a byproduct of their activity. This is why an active compost pile is noticeably warmer at its centre than the surrounding air, particularly in its early, most active stage.
A well managed compost needs a balance of carbon rich material, such as dry leaves or shredded paper, and nitrogen rich material, such as vegetable scraps, along with enough moisture and oxygen for the microorganisms to thrive. Getting this balance right speeds up decomposition and reduces unpleasant odours considerably.
The end result is a dark, crumbly material rich in nutrients that can be dug back into soil to improve its structure and fertility. In this sense, composting is less about disposing of waste and more about redirecting organic material back into a cycle it would naturally be part of anyway.
