How Construction Waste Gets Diverted From Landfill

Construction and demolition activity generates a substantial volume of waste, but a large share of it, such as concrete, brick, timber and metal, is genuinely recoverable if separated on site rather than mixed together into a single skip bin destined for landfill without any sorting at all.

Concrete and brick can be crushed and reused as aggregate for new construction projects, timber can sometimes be reused directly or chipped for other purposes, and metal is straightforward to recycle through the same channels as other scrap metal, provided it is kept separate from other waste streams.

Diverting this material requires deliberate planning on site, including separate bins for different waste types and contractors trained in sorting practices, rather than treating construction waste as a single undifferentiated problem to be dealt with at the very end of a project once everything is already mixed together. Some jurisdictions now require this kind of sorting on larger sites as a condition of the building permit itself.
