How Food Waste Becomes Compost or Energy

Food waste collected separately from general rubbish generally follows one of two paths, depending on local infrastructure. It can be composted, where microorganisms break it down aerobically into a nutrient rich material suitable for soil, or it can be sent to anaerobic digestion, a process that breaks it down without oxygen instead.

Anaerobic digestion produces biogas, largely methane, which can be captured and burned to generate electricity or heat, alongside a nutrient rich residue that can still be applied to land afterward. This dual output, energy and a soil amendment, is why digestion is often favoured for large scale food waste processing over composting alone.

Either path diverts organic material from landfill, where it would otherwise decompose without oxygen and release methane uncontrolled into the atmosphere rather than captured for use. The choice between composting and digestion usually comes down to available infrastructure and the volume of food waste a particular area needs to process.
