How Industrial Scrubbers Clean Emissions

A scrubber is equipment fitted to an industrial exhaust stack that removes pollutants before gases are released into the atmosphere. Wet scrubbers work by spraying a liquid, often water mixed with a chemical that reacts with specific pollutants, through the gas stream so that contaminants are captured in the liquid.

Dry scrubbers take a different approach, using a reactive powder or filter material that pollutants stick to or react with as gases pass through. The choice between wet and dry systems generally depends on the specific pollutant being targeted and practical factors like available water and how the resulting waste is handled.

Scrubbers are particularly effective against sulphur dioxide and particulate matter, both common byproducts of burning fuel in industrial processes. Because they treat emissions at the source, before dispersal into open air, they can achieve reductions that would be impossible to replicate once pollutants have already spread into the atmosphere.
