LED bulbs produce light through a semiconductor process rather than by heating a filament until it glows, which is how older incandescent bulbs worked. This fundamentally different mechanism wastes far less energy as heat, converting a much larger share of the electricity consumed directly into usable light instead.
Because so little energy is lost as heat, LEDs also tend to last considerably longer than older bulb types, often rated for many thousands of hours of use before needing replacement, which further reduces both cost and the resource use involved in manufacturing and disposing of bulbs over time.
The energy savings compound across a household with many light fittings, since lighting can be a meaningful share of electricity use in a home that keeps lights on for long periods each evening. Replacing older bulbs with LEDs is often one of the simplest, lowest cost efficiency upgrades a household can make right away.
