How Native Grasslands Support Ecosystems

Native grasslands are often mistaken for empty or unused land, yet they support a remarkably diverse community of grasses, wildflowers, insects, reptiles and ground nesting birds, many of which are specifically adapted to open, treeless conditions and struggle considerably in denser, more shaded vegetation types found nearby.

These ecosystems depend heavily on disturbance to stay healthy, whether from grazing, fire or occasional flooding, since without some form of regular disturbance, grasslands can gradually be overtaken by woody shrubs and trees that shade out the smaller, sun loving species the grassland community actually depends on to persist.

Because native grasslands are often easier to clear for agriculture or development than forest, and because they lack the visual drama of taller vegetation, they have historically received less conservation attention than other ecosystem types, even though the biodiversity they support can be genuinely comparable to far more celebrated habitats elsewhere in the same region.
