How Solar Panels Convert Sunlight Into Power

Solar panels are made of semiconductor cells that generate an electric current when sunlight strikes them, a process driven by particles of light knocking electrons loose within the material. This direct conversion from light to electricity happens with no moving parts, which is part of why solar panels tend to require so little ongoing maintenance once properly installed on a roof.

The electricity produced this way is direct current, which most household appliances cannot use directly, so an inverter converts it into the alternating current that runs through a home's wiring and matches what the electricity grid itself uses. This conversion step is a quiet but essential part of any working solar system, sitting between the panels and the switchboard.

Panel output varies with sunlight intensity, angle and temperature, which is why placement and orientation matter considerably when a system is installed. A well positioned system can offset a meaningful share of household electricity use, though output naturally dips on overcast days and stops entirely once the sun goes down each evening, which is why storage and grid connection both remain relevant.
