How Urban Wetlands Manage Stormwater and Habitat

Purpose built urban wetlands are designed to slow and filter stormwater runoff from surrounding streets and hard surfaces before it reaches a natural waterway, using the same basic filtering processes found in natural wetlands, sediment settling, nutrient uptake by plants, but deliberately engineered into an urban setting.

Because these constructed wetlands need to handle variable stormwater flows, from a light drizzle to a heavy downpour, they are typically designed with multiple zones, from a deeper sediment trapping pond through to shallower, densely vegetated areas that provide the bulk of the actual water filtering as water gradually moves through the whole system.

Beyond their primary stormwater function, urban wetlands often become genuinely valuable habitat for waterbirds, frogs and other wildlife within an otherwise built up landscape, along with a pleasant, accessible green space for the local community, making them a rare example of infrastructure that serves several distinct purposes at once rather than just one.
