How Volatile Organic Compounds Affect Air

Volatile organic compounds, often shortened to VOCs, are carbon based chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature. They are released from sources as varied as paints, solvents, fuel, cleaning products and even some furniture, and once airborne they can react with sunlight to form ground level ozone.

Indoors, VOCs are a major contributor to what is sometimes called new building or new furniture smell, since many finishes and adhesives continue to off gas for weeks or months after installation. Good ventilation during and after this period noticeably reduces indoor concentrations while the off gassing tapers off.

Outdoors, VOCs matter less for their direct smell and more for what they become once sunlight gets involved, feeding into the same reaction chain that produces smog. This is why VOC emissions from industry and consumer products are regulated alongside nitrogen oxides rather than considered a separate, minor issue. Choosing lower VOC paints and products indoors, and being mindful of ventilation during use, remains one of the simpler ways a household can influence its own air quality.
