How Wetland Restoration Supports Biodiversity

Restoring a degraded wetland typically involves reintroducing the natural water flows that were altered by drainage, filling or diversion, along with replanting native reeds, sedges and other water tolerant vegetation that once anchored the ecosystem before it was disturbed by nearby agriculture, development or altered drainage patterns over the years.

As water levels and vegetation recover, wetlands generally become highly productive habitat again fairly quickly, supporting everything from waterbirds and fish to amphibians and countless smaller invertebrates that in turn feed a much wider food web extending well beyond the wetland's own physical boundaries and into surrounding land.

Because wetlands are naturally resilient systems once their basic water regime is restored, recovery can happen more rapidly than in some other habitat types, making wetland restoration one of the more genuinely rewarding forms of ecological repair, provided the underlying hydrology, meaning how and when water actually moves through the site, is addressed properly first.
