How Wetlands Filter Pollutants Naturally

Wetlands act as a kind of natural kidney for water moving through a landscape. As water slows down while passing through reeds, sedges and saturated soil, sediment settles out, and plant roots along with soil microbes take up excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus before the water moves further downstream.

This filtering happens through several linked processes at once: physical settling of particles, chemical binding within soil layers, and biological uptake by plants and microorganisms. Because these processes work together, a healthy wetland can measurably improve water quality between where it enters and where it eventually exits.

Losing wetlands to drainage or fill therefore has consequences well beyond the site itself, since the filtering capacity they provided for free has to be replaced by engineered treatment or simply lost, often showing up later as poorer water quality in rivers, estuaries and bays further downstream. This is one reason wetland protection is often treated as water infrastructure in its own right, not simply as habitat worth preserving for its own sake.
