Whether electric heating is genuinely cleaner than gas heating depends heavily on how the electricity being used was actually generated, since electric heating powered by a grid still reliant on considerable fossil fuel generation may not offer a meaningfully clear emissions advantage over efficient, direct gas heating in that particular region.
As electricity grids incorporate more renewable generation over time, the emissions case for electric heating strengthens correspondingly, since the same electric heater draws on progressively cleaner electricity without needing any change to the heater itself, a genuine advantage gas heating cannot realistically replicate through its own separate infrastructure.
Heat pump technology adds a further consideration to this comparison, since heat pumps generally use electricity considerably more efficiently than basic electric resistance heating, meaning the specific type of electric heating being compared, not simply electric versus gas as broad categories, genuinely matters to reaching an honest, complete answer to this question.
