Glass is often assumed to be the clearly superior, more environmentally friendly packaging choice compared with plastic, partly because it can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality, but glass is also considerably heavier than plastic, meaning it requires more energy to transport the same volume of product over an equivalent distance.
Manufacturing glass also requires melting raw materials at very high temperatures, an energy intensive process that carries its own meaningful emissions footprint, particularly when the glass being produced is not made from a high proportion of recycled cullet, which melts at a somewhat lower temperature than entirely virgin raw material would require.
The genuinely fair comparison depends heavily on specific factors like transport distance, whether the container is actually reused or recycled after use, and local recycling infrastructure, meaning neither material is straightforwardly superior in every single situation, contrary to the simplified version of this comparison often repeated casually in everyday conversation.
