Carpooling brings multiple people together in a single vehicle for a shared trip, most commonly a regular commute, splitting both the cost of fuel and the number of vehicles needed to move the same group of people to broadly the same destination each day, whether that is a workplace or a school run.
Ride sharing, in its more organised form, often relies on an app or a workplace board to match people travelling similar routes at similar times, turning what used to depend on personal networks and word of mouth into something that strangers heading the same way can coordinate far more easily than before.
Beyond the direct fuel savings for participants, fewer vehicles on the road for the same number of trips eases congestion and reduces demand for parking at the destination, benefits that extend to everyone on the road even though only the carpooling group is actually sharing a single vehicle for that journey.
