The Basics of Off Grid Power Systems

An off grid power system generates and stores all of a property's electricity independently, without any connection back to the main electricity grid, typically combining solar panels or another generation source with a substantial battery bank sized to cover demand through periods without much sun at all.
Because there is no grid connection to fall back on during periods of low generation or high demand, off grid systems are generally sized considerably larger than grid connected solar and battery setups, with a backup generator often included to cover extended periods of poor generating conditions across several days.
Off grid systems suit properties where connecting to the grid would be prohibitively expensive due to distance, but they require careful, ongoing management of energy use to avoid running short of stored power, unlike a grid connected home that can simply draw more from the network whenever it is needed, day or night.
