The Basics of Soil Regeneration

Soil regeneration focuses on rebuilding the biological, chemical and physical health of soil that has been degraded through practices like intensive tillage, overgrazing or heavy chemical use, aiming to restore the complex web of organic matter, microorganisms and structure that supports genuinely healthy plant growth over the long term.

Techniques commonly used include reducing soil disturbance, maintaining continuous plant cover rather than leaving bare ground exposed, and reintroducing diverse plant species whose different root structures and growth patterns help rebuild soil structure and feed the vast community of organisms living within a healthy, functioning soil ecosystem underground.

Because healthy soil holds water more effectively and supports more resilient plant growth, regeneration efforts often deliver benefits well beyond the soil itself, including reduced erosion, improved water quality in nearby waterways and generally greater resilience to both drought and heavy rainfall events compared with degraded, compacted ground found nearby on similar sites.
