The Basics of Vehicle Idling and Its Impact

Idling occurs when a vehicle's engine runs while the vehicle itself is stationary, whether waiting in a queue, parked briefly outside a school or shop, or simply warming up before a trip, burning fuel and producing emissions the entire time without the vehicle actually travelling anywhere at all.
Modern engines generally do not need much extended idling time to warm up before driving, meaning the practice often persists more from habit than genuine mechanical necessity, particularly in colder climates where drivers may assume, sometimes wrongly, that a longer warm up period genuinely protects the engine or improves comfort.
Because idling produces emissions concentrated in one spot, often near other people such as pedestrians, cyclists or children waiting nearby, reducing unnecessary idling can have a locally concentrated air quality benefit that is very easy to overlook when thinking about vehicle emissions only in terms of total distance travelled overall each year.
