The Difference Between Compostable and Biodegradable

Biodegradable simply means a material will eventually break down through natural processes, but it says nothing about how long that takes or what conditions are needed. Left in the wrong environment, a technically biodegradable item can persist for a very long time, since breakdown may require specific heat, moisture or microbial activity.

Compostable is a narrower, more specific claim: the material is designed to break down within a defined timeframe under particular composting conditions, often industrial composting with controlled heat and turning, and to leave behind no harmful residue. Not every compostable item breaks down well in a home compost bin.

This distinction matters at the point of disposal, since a compostable item placed in general waste heading to landfill will not necessarily behave any differently to plastic in that low oxygen environment. Checking local guidance on where a compostable product is actually accepted matters more than the label alone.
