The Journey of Rainwater Through a City

In a natural landscape, rain soaks into soil, is taken up by plants or slowly filters into groundwater. In a built up area, roads, roofs and car parks replace that absorbent surface with hard, impervious material, so rain becomes runoff almost immediately rather than being gradually absorbed.

That runoff picks up whatever sits on paved surfaces: oil residue, sediment, litter and garden chemicals. It then travels through gutters and stormwater drains, which in most cities lead straight to a local creek, river or the ocean without treatment, unlike water that goes down a sink or toilet.

Understanding this path explains why stormwater drains often carry warnings about what enters them. It also explains why urban design features like permeable paving, rain gardens and street trees matter: they slow water down and let some of it filter through soil again before it reaches a waterway. Even small interventions at a household level, like a rain barrel under a downpipe, contribute to this same slowing effect at a manageable scale.
