The Role of Battery Recycling in Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicle batteries contain valuable materials, including lithium, cobalt and nickel, that can be recovered and reused once a battery reaches the end of its useful life in a vehicle, reducing the need to extract fresh raw material from the ground for every new battery produced.

Before a battery is fully recycled, it often still holds meaningful capacity for less demanding uses, such as stationary storage supporting a home solar system, extending its useful working life considerably before the more resource intensive recycling process becomes the genuinely appropriate next step for that particular unit.

As the number of electric vehicles on the road continues to grow steadily, building reliable recycling infrastructure specifically for these batteries becomes increasingly important, both to manage the materials responsibly and to reduce the electric vehicle sector's ongoing reliance on freshly and newly mined raw material for every single additional battery that eventually gets manufactured and sold.
