Ceiling fans do not lower air temperature directly, but the airflow they create increases evaporative cooling from skin, making a room feel several degrees cooler to occupants than a thermometer reading alone would suggest, which is why they pair so well with air conditioning in most homes and living spaces generally.
Because fans cool people rather than the air itself, running a fan in an empty room provides no benefit and simply consumes electricity unnecessarily throughout the day. Fans are most useful directly above occupied spaces, switched off again whenever a room is left empty for any meaningful length of time.
Used alongside air conditioning, ceiling fans allow a thermostat to be set a little higher while maintaining comfort, since the added airflow compensates for the higher air temperature, offering a genuine way to reduce cooling energy use without sacrificing comfort during hot weather across a long, sticky summer season.
