The Role of Keystone Species in Habitats

A keystone species has an outsized influence on its ecosystem relative to its overall abundance, meaning its presence or absence can reshape the entire habitat in ways that a similarly sized population of most other species simply would not, often through effects that ripple outward across many other species indirectly.

Classic examples include predators that keep herbivore populations in check, preventing overgrazing that would otherwise degrade vegetation, or species that physically engineer their environment, such as animals that dig burrows or build structures that other species then rely on directly for shelter or breeding once they exist.

Because keystone species have such disproportionate influence, their loss from an ecosystem can trigger changes that cascade through the entire food web in ways that are often difficult to predict in advance, which is part of why conservation efforts frequently prioritise protecting or reintroducing these particular species specifically over others that seem numerically more abundant.
