A material recovery facility is the destination for most kerbside recycling once a truck has finished its collection round, functioning as the sorting hub where mixed recyclables are separated into distinct material streams before being sold onward to whoever will actually reprocess them into something new.
Inside, a combination of conveyor belts, magnets, air jets, optical scanners and, in most facilities, human staff work together to separate paper, cardboard, glass, metal and different plastic types from what arrives as a single mixed load, often processing large volumes of material every single day.
The quality of what leaves a material recovery facility directly determines whether reprocessors will accept it, which is why contamination anywhere earlier in the chain, from an incorrectly sorted household bin onward, ultimately shows up here as rejected, lower value material heading to landfill instead of a new product. This is why some facilities publish contamination rates publicly, treating them as a genuine measure of program performance.
