The Role of Seed Banks in Restoration

A seed bank preserves seeds from native plant species, often collected across many different populations to capture a wide range of genetic diversity, storing them under carefully controlled conditions so they remain viable for future use, sometimes for decades, well beyond how long seeds would naturally survive if simply left in the wild.
This stored genetic diversity becomes genuinely valuable for restoration projects, providing a reliable source of locally appropriate seed for revegetation work without needing to strip seed directly from already limited wild populations, which could otherwise place additional pressure on the very populations that restoration work is ultimately trying to support.
Seed banks also serve as a kind of genuine insurance against local extinction, preserving genetic material from populations that might otherwise be lost entirely to disease, habitat loss or a changing climate, keeping open the option of reintroducing a species to a landscape even if it disappears there entirely in the meantime.
