The Role of Trees in Cleaning Air

Trees improve air quality in a few distinct ways. Leaves physically intercept airborne particles, which then wash off with rain or fall with the leaf itself, while stomata on leaf surfaces take in certain gaseous pollutants as part of normal respiration, effectively pulling them out of the surrounding air.

Beyond direct filtering, tree canopies also provide shade that lowers local temperatures, which in turn can reduce the formation of ground level ozone on hot days, since that reaction depends heavily on heat. A cooler, shaded street is doing quiet work well beyond making a footpath more pleasant to walk.

None of this makes trees a substitute for reducing emissions at the source, since their filtering capacity is limited relative to the scale of urban pollution. They are better understood as one part of a layered approach, most valuable when paired with genuine reductions in what is being emitted in the first place.
