The Role of Tyre Choice in Fuel Efficiency

Tyres influence a vehicle's fuel efficiency mainly through rolling resistance, the force needed to keep a tyre turning against the road surface, which is shaped by tyre design, tread pattern, rubber compound and, critically, how well inflated the tyre actually is at any given time on the road.

Underinflated tyres increase rolling resistance noticeably, requiring an engine to work harder to maintain the same speed and increasing fuel consumption as a direct result, which is part of why checking tyre pressure regularly is often listed among the simplest maintenance habits for improving everyday fuel economy without any real cost.

Some tyres are specifically designed and marketed for lower rolling resistance, generally through firmer compounds and refined tread patterns, trading a small amount of outright grip for improved efficiency, a trade off that suits everyday driving conditions far better than it suits performance oriented or off road use of any real kind.
