The Water Cycle and Human Interference

The water cycle describes the continuous movement of water through evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff, a system that has operated on similar principles for as long as the planet has had oceans and an atmosphere. Human activity does not stop this cycle, but it does reshape how water moves through it.
Paving over absorbent land increases runoff and reduces the amount of water that soaks in to recharge groundwater. Removing vegetation changes how much water evaporates back into the atmosphere from plant surfaces, a process called transpiration, which in forested areas can be a genuinely significant part of local rainfall patterns.
Large scale water extraction for irrigation or drinking supply can also draw down rivers, lakes and aquifers faster than natural recharge replaces them. None of these interventions break the water cycle outright, but together they can noticeably shift how much water is available where and when it is needed.
