Understanding Air Quality Standards and Monitoring

Air quality standards set maximum acceptable concentrations for specific pollutants, such as fine particles, ozone and nitrogen dioxide, based on health research linking exposure levels to specific health outcomes, with these standards forming the benchmark against which actual monitored air quality is subsequently compared and publicly reported day to day.

Monitoring networks measure actual pollutant concentrations at fixed stations distributed across a region, feeding data back that is compared against the relevant standard to determine whether air quality on a given day meets, exceeds or falls comfortably within accepted health based limits set by the relevant regulatory authority.

Because standards are periodically reviewed as health research evolves and improves over time, what counts as an acceptable pollutant level can gradually tighten, meaning air quality that would have passed comfortably under an older standard might not necessarily meet a newer, more protective one introduced sometime later based on more recent evidence.
