Understanding Battery Recycling and Its Risks

Batteries contain a mix of metals and chemicals that are valuable to recover but potentially dangerous if handled carelessly, particularly lithium based batteries, which can short circuit and ignite if crushed, punctured or exposed to extreme heat during collection, transport or processing at a facility.

This is why batteries are collected separately from general recycling rather than placed loose in a kerbside bin, where they can be crushed by sorting machinery designed for more robust materials, creating a genuine fire risk that has caused serious incidents at recycling and waste facilities in several places.

Dedicated battery recycling recovers metals like cobalt, nickel and lithium for reuse in new batteries or other products, reducing the need for fresh mining. Dropping batteries at a designated collection point, rather than a general bin, protects both the recycling process and the people working within it. Many retailers now host a small collection box near the entrance specifically for this purpose.
