Understanding Carbon Monoxide Risks Indoors

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas produced whenever fuel burns without enough oxygen for complete combustion, a condition that can occur in poorly maintained heaters, gas appliances or vehicles running in enclosed spaces such as an attached garage. Even a well built home can develop this risk quickly if a single appliance is faulty or a flue becomes blocked without anyone realising.

Because it has no smell or colour, carbon monoxide gives no obvious warning of its presence, and it interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, which is what makes even moderate exposure genuinely dangerous rather than merely unpleasant, unlike many pollutants that irritate before they seriously harm.

Good ventilation, regular servicing of gas appliances and heaters, and a working carbon monoxide detector are the standard, low cost defences against this risk. Because symptoms of low level exposure, like headache and fatigue, can resemble other common illnesses, detection often relies on the alarm rather than how a person feels. Treating a working alarm as essential safety equipment, in the same category as a smoke detector, reflects how seriously this particular risk is taken by safety authorities.
