Electric vehicle charging is generally grouped into levels based on speed. The slowest, often called trickle or level one charging, uses a standard household power point and can take many hours to fully charge a depleted battery, making it best suited to overnight charging at home rather than a quick top up.
Faster level two charging uses a dedicated charging unit, commonly installed at home or in workplace car parks, delivering considerably more power than a standard socket and reducing charging time significantly, making it a practical option for topping up a battery during a working day or over a shorter evening stop.
Rapid or fast charging, typically found at dedicated public charging stations along highways, can restore a substantial share of battery capacity in well under an hour, making longer road trips genuinely practical, though this speed comes at the cost of specialised equipment and generally higher electricity prices per unit delivered.
