Understanding Fuel Efficiency Labels on Vehicles

Fuel efficiency labels display standardised figures for how much fuel a vehicle consumes over a given distance, typically measured under controlled laboratory conditions using a fixed testing cycle so that different models can be compared fairly against one another regardless of who manufactured them or where the test took place.

Because the underlying test cycle is standardised, real world fuel consumption often differs from the labelled figure, sometimes considerably, since actual driving involves variables like traffic conditions, terrain, load and individual driving style that a controlled laboratory test cannot fully replicate no matter how carefully it has been designed.

Despite this gap between laboratory and road conditions, the labels remain genuinely useful for relative comparison between models, since the same testing method is applied consistently across vehicles, meaning a car rated more efficient than another under test conditions will typically remain more efficient under normal, everyday driving conditions as well, even if the exact figures differ somewhat.
