Understanding Groundwater and Aquifers

An aquifer is a layer of rock, sand or gravel beneath the surface that holds water within its pores and cracks, much like a sponge rather than an underground lake. Rain and surface water slowly seep down through soil to recharge it, a process that can take anywhere from days to centuries.

Because recharge is slow, aquifers respond gradually to both use and pollution. Water drawn out faster than it is replenished can lower the water table over years, while contaminants that reach an aquifer, from leaking chemicals to agricultural runoff, can persist there for a long time once they arrive.

This slow, hidden nature is exactly why groundwater protection focuses heavily on prevention rather than cleanup. Once contamination reaches deep groundwater, remediation is difficult, expensive and often only partial, which makes careful management of what happens on the surface above an aquifer a genuinely long term responsibility. Activities that seem harmless on the surface, from leaking underground fuel tanks to over application of fertiliser, can quietly shape groundwater quality for decades before anyone notices.
