Understanding Hot Water System Efficiency
Launch library · evergreen read

Hot water heating is typically one of the larger energy uses in an average household, which makes the choice of system, from storage electric through to gas, heat pump or solar, a meaningful factor in overall household energy consumption and ongoing running costs each quarter, on top of whatever else the household already uses power for.
Heat pump hot water systems work similarly to heat pump heating for a home, extracting warmth from surrounding air rather than generating heat directly, which allows them to produce considerably more hot water energy than the electricity they consume compared with standard electric storage systems working alone.
Solar hot water systems use rooftop collectors to heat water directly using sunlight, often backed by a small electric or gas booster for cloudy periods or times of especially high demand, combining renewable generation with a reliable backup to ensure hot water remains available consistently throughout the year.
