Understanding Invasive Species Management

An invasive species is one introduced, whether deliberately or by accident, to an environment where it did not evolve naturally, and which then spreads aggressively, often because it lacks the natural predators, diseases or competitors that would normally keep its numbers in check within its original native range.

Management approaches vary considerably depending on the species involved and how established it already is, ranging from early detection and rapid removal while numbers are still low, through to longer term, ongoing control programs for species that are already widespread and effectively impossible to fully eradicate at this point.

Because invasive species can outcompete native species for food, space or light, or in some cases prey on them directly, effective management is often considered essential for protecting native biodiversity, even though control programs can be genuinely resource intensive and, for some already widespread species, need to continue indefinitely without a clear end point.
