Passive solar design shapes a building's orientation, window placement and thermal mass to work with the sun's natural path rather than relying primarily on mechanical heating and cooling to keep an interior comfortable throughout the changing seasons of the year, season after season without much added machinery running constantly in the background.
In cooler climates, this often means placing larger windows facing the winter sun to capture free daytime warmth, paired with materials like concrete or brick that absorb that heat during the day and release it slowly overnight, well after the sun itself has already gone down for the evening.
In warmer climates, the same principles work in reverse, using shading, orientation and ventilation to keep direct summer sun out of living spaces while still allowing natural light in, reducing dependence on air conditioning considerably across the hottest months of the year without sacrificing daytime brightness indoors for occupants.
