Understanding the Basics of Vehicle Emissions Testing

Vehicle emissions testing measures the pollutants a vehicle's exhaust actually produces under specified conditions, checking this output against regulatory limits designed to keep air pollution from vehicles within levels considered acceptable for public health across a given jurisdiction and its own particular air quality goals set by regulators.

Tests typically focus on pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, measured either in a laboratory setting using standardised driving cycles or, increasingly, through real world testing that better reflects how a vehicle actually performs on ordinary roads rather than under controlled conditions alone in a lab.

Results from this testing inform both vehicle certification, determining whether a model can legally be sold in a given market, and ongoing roadworthiness checks in some jurisdictions, helping ensure vehicles continue meeting emissions standards throughout their entire working life rather than only when they were brand new and freshly certified for sale.
