Understanding the Role of Fungi in Forests

Fungi form an enormous, mostly hidden network throughout forest soil, with thread like structures called mycelium connecting to plant roots in a relationship that benefits both partners: the fungus receives sugars produced by the plant through photosynthesis, while the plant gains improved access to water and soil nutrients in return.

This underground network, sometimes described informally as a kind of wood wide web, can link multiple trees and plants together, allowing nutrients and even chemical signals to pass between them in ways researchers are still working to fully understand, adding a layer of connection to a forest well beyond what is visible above ground.

Beyond this partnership role, other fungi work as decomposers, breaking down fallen leaves, dead wood and other organic material into simpler compounds that recycle back into the soil, a process essential to keeping nutrients cycling through a forest rather than simply locked away in material that never breaks down.
