What E-Waste Recycling Involves

Electronic waste, or e-waste, covers everything from old phones and computers to household appliances, and it is treated separately from general recycling because it combines valuable recoverable materials with components that can be hazardous if handled carelessly, such as certain batteries and circuit board coatings.
Processing typically starts with manual disassembly to remove batteries and other hazardous parts safely, followed by mechanical shredding of the remaining material. Magnets, eddy currents and other separation techniques then recover metals like copper, aluminium and small amounts of precious metals used in circuit boards.
Because e-waste contains materials that are both valuable and potentially harmful, informal or unregulated processing can expose workers and the environment to toxic substances, which is why proper e-waste recycling through dedicated collection points, rather than general kerbside bins, matters more than it does for most other waste categories. Many retailers and councils now offer free drop off points specifically for this reason, making proper disposal only slightly less convenient than the kerbside bin.
