An energy rating label, commonly shown as a series of stars, offers a standardised way to compare how efficiently different appliance models of the same type and size perform, based on testing conducted under consistent conditions rather than relying on manufacturer claims alone to judge how a given model actually performs.
More stars generally indicate lower energy consumption for a comparable level of performance, though ratings are typically only meaningful when comparing appliances of similar size and type, since a larger appliance with a high rating can still use more total energy than a smaller one rated lower overall.
Alongside the star rating, labels usually include an estimated annual energy consumption figure, which is often more useful for direct comparison shopping than the star rating alone, since it translates efficiency into a concrete number that can be compared directly against a household's own running cost expectations for the coming year.
