What Makes Soil Healthy for Plant Growth

Healthy soil supports plant growth through a combination of physical structure, chemical composition and biological activity working together, rather than any single one of these factors alone, meaning genuinely healthy soil is considerably more than simply dirt containing the right basic nutrients for a given plant species.

Physically, healthy soil holds a balance of air and water within its structure, allowing roots to access both without either drowning or drying out, while biologically, a diverse community of bacteria, fungi and small invertebrates breaks down organic matter and makes nutrients genuinely available to growing plant roots throughout the soil profile.

Practices that damage this biological and physical structure, such as excessive tillage, compaction from heavy machinery or leaving soil bare and exposed for extended periods, can degrade soil health considerably even while chemical nutrient levels might still appear entirely adequate on a standard laboratory soil test result taken directly from that same site.
