Micromobility covers a range of small, lightweight vehicles designed for short trips, including bicycles, electric bicycles, scooters and similar devices, generally suited to distances too far to comfortably walk but too short to justify a car trip or a full public transport journey across a city.
These options have grown considerably in many cities alongside dedicated infrastructure and, in some places, shared rental schemes that let people pick up and drop off a vehicle without owning one themselves, lowering the barrier to trying a mode of transport a person might not otherwise consider using regularly.
Because micromobility trips tend to replace short car journeys rather than longer ones, their impact on emissions per trip can be disproportionately meaningful, given that short car trips are often less fuel efficient overall due to a cold engine and frequent stopping typical of that kind of short, local journey around a quiet neighbourhood street.
